Winter Weather Update: Friday, 10 December

Snow

The fleet of gritters treated the main roads across the East Riding last night and again in the early hours of this morning with road surface temperatures generally down to -2’C.

This morning we are out again working on the secondary network, plus other key access roads across the East Riding. Parts of this network still have compact snow and ice and we hope to be able to plough and push this snow about and get more roads clear over the next few days, but it is going to take some time.

Street sweeping and grounds staff are out removing snow from highly used pedestrian areas and filling salt bins. Council car parks are also being treated so motorists can continue to park.

ERYC have also treated the category 1 footways from 4am this morning and we are using the quad bikes to treat other main footpaths during the day.

Numerous requests have been received for help and assistance and we are doing our very best to prioritise and respond positively wherever possible. Every effort is being made to respond to individual requests as swiftly as possible but there is a high level of activity in strategically managing service delivery.

has also introduced a new pilot scheme to support town and parish councils across the East Riding to undertake snow clearing, gritting and other works and activities on roads and in public places to help local communities cope with the current extreme weather conditions.

So far, more than £40,000 has been provided to 46 town and parish councils.  The support has been used to arrange for local farmers, handymen, contractors, landscapers and similar businesses to clear away snow and ice, purchase salt and salt bins and other equipment like salt spreaders and shovels.  Town and parish councils can contact 01482 393050 to find out more about the scheme.

Forecasters indicate that temperatures during today will be +3 and we will at last start to see the start of a thaw. Temperatures overnight will be around freezing point and we expect to see more of a thaw on Saturday.

Ice and slush on roads and footpaths will continue to be an issue for our residents to navigate for days to come. Indications from Sunday are that cold weather will return for next week so conditions will remain challenging for our residents and we are working hard to make as much progress as we can whilst conditions are slightly more favourable.
