Christmas Celebration to Mark SSAFA’s 125th Anniversary

A “Celebration of Christmas” will take place on Saturday 11th December at St Mary’s in , in aid of (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) Forces Help.

Organised by Cllr David Elvidge, who had SSAFA as his charity during his year as Mayor of Beverley, explained that the occasion will also make a special anniversary for SSAFA:

“This is SSAFA’s 125th year and it seemed like a nice idea to hold an event that not only celebrates the festive season, but also raises the profile of this venerable organisation, which has made a difference to thousands of lives over decades.  Christmas is a time when families and friends gather together, but for families that have relatives in the Armed Forces, their loved ones may not be home this Christmas, but on active service half way around the world.  This event will also be an opportunity to send our thoughts and prayers to all those men and women serving their country in far off lands, who will not have the comfort of spending Christmas with their loved ones.”

Starting at 2pm, the hour-long event will include traditional carols, from the Regimental Band 150 Transport Regiment RLC (V), songs from St Mary’s and St Nicholas’ school choirs and festive readings.

Cllr Elvidge said: “We are delighted that the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Mr. Patrick Farnsworth and Cllr Bessie Foot Mayor of Beverley will be joining alongside Captain (Retired) Chris Millings MBE from SSAFA.   It’s also great to have youngsters involved with the school choirs and we’re lucky to have the regimental band to lead us in carols.”

Entry to the concert is free, with discretionary donations going to SSAFA.  There will also be a range of SSAFA merchandise, including specially designed Christmas cards, available to purchase.

Cllr Elvidge concluded: “We hope people will come along to celebrate both Christmas and SSAFA’s anniversary and stay on afterwards for mince pies and hot drinks to celebrate the start of the festive season.”

  1. Great piece Paul, I look forward to a great concert while raising funds for a worthwhile cause. The military band are always good and it will be all the more special having the two school choirs there.
