Turning Back Time in Beverley’s High Street

Anyone who is enjoying ‘Turn Back Time – The High Street’ currently showing on 1 may be interested to know that the project will be visiting Beverley between Monday 22nd and 26th November.

The Video Nation Network (an online platform that allows people to submit and share videos, and add their voice, to BBC projects and news) will be bringing a bus kitted out with editing facilities to enable local people to make several short films reflecting different aspects of Beverley’s community and history.  During a four-day workshop, they hope to explore creative ways of story-telling, and teach film making skills.

Video Nation are looking for local people of any age who would like to be in front of the camera, behind the camera or both!  They are also very interested in anyone who has a great story to tell about Beverley’s town centre and how it has changed.  They would like to know why some shops and people stood the test of time, and why others did not, and how the centre of town has had to change to accommodate modern developments, such as traffic schemes and and how they have coped with competition from the big retail parks.

The Video Nation Network hope to bring to life the recent history of the streets of Beverley, as told by local people and archive footage.  They would love to see any old photographs or film, or even old paintings, which depict life in Beverley in days gone by.  They are particularly interested in images of the shops, community celebrations in the street and gathering places such as churches and community centres.

If you have stories, photos or moving images of Beverley High Street’s past which you would like to be involved in this project, please contact leonie.collier@bbc.co.uk or call on 07971 975 075 for more details.

The material produced will be hosted on BBC websites, BBC Big Screens and The Community Channel.  This community film making project will also be covered by BBC and Look North.
