Beverley Town Exit Cup on Penalties

went into this East Riding Senior Cup competition full of confidence, and as the first half went on, their confidence paid off.

Beverley took the lead when the ball went into the box and under pressure from the two defenders they managed to slot the ball into the lower corner of the net. Town should have gone two up before half time, when a clean pass went through on goal only for the forward to hit a tame shot at the keeper.

After the break it was now the turn of Hutton Cranswick to do the pressing.  With more pace and more time on the ball, Hutton Cranswick started to get on top and scored a deserved equaliser. Beverley had to work hard as a team to stop the home side taking the lead.   Both teams continued to effectively cancel each other out, and it looked as though this was how the game would finish, but as a cross came in from Beverley, the Goalie somehow fumbled the ball and it dropped to a Beverley Town player who made no mistake from 6 yards out.  At 2-1 up with minutes to go, all Town had to do was stay calm and see out the time, but with the last move of the game Hutton Cranswick somehow managed to get a draw.  There was a suspicion of handball, but the goal stood.

After a long discussion with officials and players the game went to penalties, as there was not enough light to play extra time.  Beverley’s first two penalty kicks were saved, so it is Hutton Cranswick who are going through to the next round. This was tough on Beverley as over the full 90 minutes they were slightly the stronger side.
