Steve Peacock Wins First Prize in the V40 Category

Former World, Olympic, European, Commonwealth and British 400-metre hurdles champion Sally Gunnell joined more than a thousand runners in the McCain Yorkshire Coast 10k road race in Scarborough last Sunday.

Organised by Scarborough Athletic club to raise funds for a new track facility in Scarborough, the race attracted a strong field of athletes from running clubs all over Yorkshire.  They were joined by 38 members of competing for points in the club’s handicap competition.

The handicap was won by Club Secretary, Brian Richardson, who recently celebrated his 65th birthday.  He finished in 47.04 and more than two minutes faster than his predicted time.  Although preferring to let others take the limelight, Richardson deserves to be recognised.  He works very hard for Beverley Athletic Club and continues to compete in the full range of events, performing better than some much younger men.  He sets a fine example to his club mates.

Jo Dewar was surprised to find herself in the spotlight in Scarborough when it was announced that she had won first prize in the F55 category.  A relative newcomer to Beverley Athletic Club, Dewar was delighted to win her first prize.  She set a new personal best time of 51.05 and was thrilled to be presented with her prize by Sally Gunnell.  “I think going to speed training has paid off,” she commented afterwards, acknowledging the contribution of club mates Rob Reid and Helen Storr who lead the weekly speed training sessions.

Beverley’s first runner over the line was James Pearson who finished in ninth place overall.  He was followed only eight seconds later by Aubrey Morrell who put in a very strong performance to finish in tenth position in 35.53.  Morrell’s efforts were rewarded with first prize in the V40 category.  He was really pleased to beat strong local rivals and admitted that “it was a great bonus to be pulled along by James Pearson.”

On a roll after a brilliant performance in the Abingdon marathon only 2 weeks ago, Steve Peacock won first prize in the V45 category while Pam Atkins picked up first prize in the F65 age group.

The event was extremely well organised with chip timing to record the times of all competitors accurately.  The flat course followed a scenic seaside route and thanks to Scarborough Borough Council roads on the course were closed to traffic for the duration of the race providing a safe environment for all runners.

There were 1016 finishers and the race was won by Ricky Stevenson of New Marske Harriers in 30.15.  The first lady to finish was Hester Butterworth of Scarborough AC in 40.42.  Sally Gunnell completed the course in 48.51.
