Beverley Town Council Pipes Up

Pipe Band MainBeverley Town Council and the Beverley and District Pipe Band are joining forces to pilot an event that could see more brought to the streets of Beverley in the future.

As reported in the local media in September, the idea is to not just bring live entertainment into public spaces that everyone can enjoy, but might to also encourage shoppers to visit areas of the town that are currently experiencing a downturn in trade.

Councillor David Elvidge, who came up the idea, explained:  “We’re going to give it a go in Coronation Gardens, on Within, to see if have an appetite for on a Saturday within the town centre.  The Beverley and District Pipe Band have quite a following, having appeared at many local festivals and events in recent years, and have kindly offered to play for free to see if this project will work.”

The band will be playing in Coronation Garden on Saturday 23rd October 2010, giving two thirty minute performances at 11am and 1pm.

Town Councillors will attend the event and will discuss the idea further over autumn and winter, to see if the scheme is viable to start on a more regular basis in the spring of 2011.

If it looks like there is future for such performances, Councillor Elvidge hopes that his fellow councillors will help him to progress this further.  He said:  “Councillor , who has a lot of experience working on town centre events, and Councillor Bryan Pearson have been working with me to look at all the possible options in the future.

Whilst it’s important to help North Bar Within reach its full potential, we also want to look at other small gardens and locations in the town where a range of musical groups could be scheduled to perform.  Initial thoughts range from scheduling one Saturday a month in a different location each time, to something even more regular – we want to make it very clear that this is just a pilot that could see something develop next year.  We still have to look at a lot of the practicalities, but would be interested to know what people think and any suggestions they may have – so some along to Coronation Garden on Saturday 23rd October to share your thoughts with us.”

Representing the Pipe Band, Pipe Major Paul Wright, said: “The Beverley and District Pipe Band is delighted to participate in this pilot event, as we always enjoy playing in Beverley.”

The band is a dedicated group of friends that form East Yorkshire’s only competing Grade 4 Pipe Band. The focus is not solely Pipe Band Competitions, but rather the enjoyment and satisfaction gained from producing a great sound from both Pipes and Drums. Anyone interested in finding out a bit more about playing the Bagpipes or Drums and or wishing to hire a Piper or Band / Mini Band can contact the band through the website.

  1. Nice piece Paul, I hope the event is well recieved and the great British public give us constructive feedback and possibly other ideas.

  2. Well done and what a great venue I fully support it. I don’t know about other ideas, what other group would donate their time and energy to help the tradesmen of Beverley?
