Discover History at The Treasure House

A free open day at the will give members of the public the chance to see hundreds of local historic documents and films.

Members of the public are invited to come and see the fascinating historic records and archive treasures available at the Treasure House during the open day, which will take place on Saturday, 25 September, between 9am and 4pm.

All the documents on display will relate to the theme of ‘discovery’ and the of science, and medicine.

Ian Mason, archives and local studies manager, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to visit and see for themselves the amazing range of history we hold in the Treasure House.”

The Treasure House stores more than 250,000 documents and local history books in five climate controlled strong rooms specially designed to preserve these priceless records for the future.

Visitors to the open day will have the rare chance to go behind the scenes on guided tours. There will also be demonstrations on how books and papers are repaired in the conservation workshop and a brief film show on industry in Beverley.

Members of staff will be on hand, specially dressed in period costume, to answer any questions about the displays or on starting family or local history research.

There will be a chance to book for the new ‘starting your family history course’ and a wide variety of other events, lectures and workshops planned to run until April.

There will also be children’s activities including colouring competitions, word searches and quizzes. Visitors will also have the chance to try writing with a quill pen.

The event is free and everyone is welcome.
