Beverley Town Trail: The Final Countdown

The launch of Beverley’s Town Trail tomorrow promises to be packed full of entertainment and education.

Nearly a decade in the making, 39 sculptures and installations make up the Beverley Medieval Guilds and Crafts Trail revealing the rich that made Beverley one of the most prosperous towns in England.

The final major piece of art was installed at the head of Beverley Beck this week when a cast statue representing the creelers – labourers who unloaded barges and carried the goods to the town centre – was winched on to its plinth.

The launch starts at 11am with a series of special performances from pupils from around the region, before the trail is officially opened by the Rt Hon Susan Cunliffe-Lister, Lord Lieutenant of East Yorkshire.

Entertainments will be spread across the town. Team Falchion will perform medieval re-enactments on the Cloisters Lawn, while in Wednesday Market, Arbeau Medieval Dancers will entertain and invite members of the audience to learn a few steps.

There will also be mystery plays, medieval craft activities, and  a treasure trail for children, while in Butchers Row and Toll Gavel local volunteers are providing art activities for children. There will also be more live entertainment and guided walks for everyone.

And from 11.30am – 4pm, tours will be available of the medieval .

Janet Reuben, chief executive of Visit and East Yorkshire, who, along with Heritage Lottery Fund, , Council and private sponsors, helped fund the trail, expects it to be a memorable day.

She said: “The is a fabulous attraction to the town that will entertain and fascinate visitors for years to come.

“The launch event is the perfect way to introduce the trail, capturing the spirit and history of what it has to offer.”
