Beverley Juniors Dominate Withernsea 5K

Beverley Athletic Club athletes enjoyed a trip to the seaside on Sunday to run the Withernsea 5 and fun run, organised by Withernsea Harriers.  There was a record entry for both races and the offer of free fish and chips for all finishers in the 5 mile race proved a big attraction for Beverley runners.

Beverley Juniors dominated the 3k fun run, with 13 runners in the first 14 positions.  Prizes were presented to Ethan Dalton, second boy, and , third boy.  The first three girls to finish were all from Beverley – Nicole Dawson, Dayna Arnott and Jessica Chapman.  All received special commemorative medals.

On a rare occasion when the juniors and seniors ran at the same location there was good representation from families within the club.

Nicole Dawson finished a minute ahead of her sister Kelly while dad Mark finished 24th in the 5 mile race.  Jessica Chapman beat her younger brother Luke to the finish.  The Brittain family had Francesca in the fun run and mum Lindsey in the main race.  warmed up in the fun run with her son Ted and then ran in the 5 mile race.

The Arnotts were the most representative family with Corey, Kelvin and Kendall in the main race and Curtis, Dayna and Taylor in the fun run.  The Arnotts have been running for Beverley Juniors for several years and it was good to see the older teenagers progressing from the fun run to the 5 mile distance.

Teenager also moved up to the main race and had a brilliant run, finishing in 11th place in 31.09 in front of some very experienced male athletes.

took third prize and was the first Beverley runner to finish.

On form Mark Dalton finished 20 seconds faster than last year and was awarded the V45 prize for the second successive year.

Beverley ladies won 3 of the 5 veteran’s prizes: V35, Jackie Wright V45 and Jayne Dale V50.  Prizes were presented by Ann Blake, Mayor of Withernsea.

Withernsea sea front looked great in the sunshine but conditions were very hot with temperatures around 26 degrees.  Runners were buffeted by a strong breeze but at least it helped to cool them down.

182 runners completed the 5 mile course and the race was won by Steve Bateson of East Hull Harriers in 26.01.
