Classic Car Show: 1973 Triumph TR6

Listening to “the clangs, the bangs and the rattles” is the only way to enjoy a really classic car, according to Chris Forster.

Chris, 53, from Willerby, was showing off his pristine 1973 Triumph TR6 at the Beverley Classic Car Rally last week.

And as he proudly admitted ‘it’s radios for show, engine sounds for dough’ when it comes to his personal indulgence.

He told .net: “The fact that it is a soft top makes it so special.

“It is completely different to drive with the top up – you hear the clangs and the bangs and the rattles, but with the top down you don’t hear any of that, all you hear is the exhaust.

“The radio is there but it has never been on. It sounds an anorak kind of statement, but you just like listening to the sound of the car.”

Chris bought the car a year ago from pal Alan Finney, car expert who specialises in Triumphs but has also restored other British classics such as an Austin Healey, a Sunbeam Alpine and MGBs.

He met Alan when his previous car, also a Triumph, developed problems and decided to ditch his old one and buy the latest one Alan was working on.

Chris continued: “Alan bought it as a wreck. I helped him in a very basic way but it was just great to see the car come together from the thousands of bits that were there.

“Everyone has a car that sets the old emotions going. As it transpires, this is one of the last true English sports cars.

“It’s a six cylinder engine, so it sounds the part. It is certainly not slow but it is not lightning fast like some more modern cars.

“They are rarer than MGs or MGBs and at these sorts of events guys just drool over it and say they always wanted one.

“Showing it off it an ego thing and it’s nice to talk to other car fanatics about the car.

“It’s always nice to have someone compliment you on your car, but I always have to remember it’s Alan who built it and it’s why you’ll never see me taking the credit for it.”
