Beverley Town CC 1st XI Vs Studley Royal

A powerful batting performance was not enough to secure a much-needed victory for Town 1st XI at home to Studley Royal on Saturday.

But the home side could be proud of their efforts as they forced the Ripon club to dig deep, earning a winning draw as they restricted Studley to 227-8 in reply to Beverley Town’s 260-6.

Beverley took full advantage of batting first on a wicket described by one visiting player as ‘a road’.

The foundations for Beverley’s impressive total were laid by openers Iain Gillyon and Andrew Burton. Burton hit 38 but it was around Gillyon that the innings was built as he hit seven fours and a six in an excellent 74.

This gave the middle order the scope to play their shots, and how they did. To the fore was , who played with authority and a correct technique to make a thoroughly entertaining 76 that included two sixes and a series of classical strokes. One late cut to the long boundary in particular highlighted his talent.

As Abid dominated the Studley bowling it gave the chance to open up and he helped himself as the innings drew to a close, hitting a blistering unbeaten 35 that saw the shoulders of the visitors visibly droop in sultry conditions as Beverley powered to 260-6.

It was never going to be easy to take wickets on a low but consistent track and Beverley had to work hard for their success.

Studley captain Steven Walmsley followed up his five wickets in the Beverley innings with an excellent 54 until he became one of spinner Peter Parnaby’s three victims.

But despite an admirable effort from Parnaby and (2-50), wickets fell slowly and although they lost eight wickets, Studley held on for the draw. The result sees Beverley still second bottom of the York and District Premier League.

The second XI found life tough at . They were dismissed for just 140 and Cottingham overhauled this for the loss of just one wicket.
