Mucky Duck 2010

This year’s Mucky Duck 8½ mile race attracted a record entry and 229 runners completed the challenging multi-terrain course around Driffield last Sunday.

Organised by Driffield Striders, the race was more windy than mucky this year, testing the athletes’ stamina even more on the tough, hilly course.

Local running clubs were well represented and there was also a significant number from further afield in Yorkshire.   With the Mucky Duck a designated handicap race for Beverley Athletic Club the club fielded a squad of 24 runners and won four prizes.

Ian Husband was the first Beverley athlete to cross the line.  He finished in 16th position overall and won first prize in the 50 – 54 category.  Mucky Duck regular, Pete Watkinson, finished in exactly the same time as last year and won second prize in the 50 – 59 age group.

Second place veterans’ prizes were also awarded to two Beverley ladies – Helen Storr (45 – 50) and Jayne Dale (50 – 54).

Prizes were presented by Harry Benson, the much respected local UK Athletics official and timekeeper.

The first Beverley lady to finish was in 64.56.  This was her first race in months since sustaining an injury last summer.  After this excellent performance on a difficult course, Traynor looks set to fulfil the promise she showed when she joined the club last year.

Several Beverley ladies recorded improved times this year.  warmed up for the main race by running the fun run with her son and finished 30 seconds faster than last year; Kay Farrow was 4 minutes faster; but Debs Brant showed the most significant improvement finishing an amazing 8 minutes faster.

Elaine Julian, recovering from an injured ankle, enjoyed her debut in the Mucky Duck but found the post-race massage more painful than the race!

The race was won for the second year in succession by Bridlington Road Runner Phil Taylor in 47 minutes 25 seconds – more than 2 minutes faster than his winning time in 2009.  Second was Matthew Hayes of East Hull Harriers in 48.03 and third was Nick Hellewell of Bridlington Road Runners in 50.04.

A new course record was set by the first lady to cross the line, Karen Pickles of Pudsey Pacers.  She finished in 12th position overall, completing the course in 53.51 and breaking the record she set in 2008 by almost a minute.  She finished more than six minutes ahead of the next ladies, Julie Masterman of

Goole Viking Striders (60.03) and Emma Brown of Bridlington Road Runners (60.20).

The men’s team prize was won by Bridlington Road Runners and Pudsey Pacers won the ladies’ team trophy.  The trophy for the fastest team of runners not attached to a running club was won by Wolds Way to Health.  Their 16-strong team was led home by Andy Smith in an excellent time of 61.01.
