FERYO Jazz and Quiz Night

The Friends of the East Riding Youth Orchestras (FERYO) held their annual Jazz and Quiz fund-raising night on 2nd May, this time at Cottingham Civic Hall.  The change of venue meant that more could be accommodated this year, and it also attracted a number of new faces.  It was a magnificent event and a good time was had by all.

The now has some 40 players, and we were treated to some magnificent and imaginative playing in their first session.  Mark Bassey, a jazz trombonist of international repute, had held a Masterclass with the orchestra in the afternoon, and his tuition and enthusiasm had clearly rubbed off on all the players.  Mark led the orchestra in a number of pieces, including one improvised tune played with no music which was very interesting!  He was also given the opportunity to play some excellent (and totally unprepared and unrehearsed) solos.  His performances gave the young players an insight into how a professional musician goes about playing and developing solo pieces, and it was clear that the orchestra thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing with him.

After this session came the food.  The chilli con carne (of various strengths) and salad accompaniment was superb, followed by some excellent puddings.  The food was a great success and contributed significantly to the atmosphere at the event.  The quiz followed – perhaps the questions seemed slightly easier than in previous years (or were the quiz teams better prepared?), resulting in a high scoring contest.  During the marking, there was a chaotic ‘stand-up bingo’ session followed by the prize giving.

The jazz orchestra’s final session was brilliant, and several of the players performed excellent solos under the guidance of Nick Riggs, including one where three drummers had to play the same kit one after the other!

Although the evening must have been very hard work for the organisers, the event was a great success and it is hoped that the FERYO charity were able to raise a substantial amount of money.  In particular however, the jazz orchestra goes from strength to strength, and this was one of their best to date.  If you get a chance to hear them again, take it!
