Students Showcase Hairdressing Talents

East Riding College Hair Dressing

Talented hairdressing students from went head to head in their annual competition this week.

More than 60 learners from the Bridlington and campuses in took part in the contest, with support from beauty students who provided make-up expertise.

The three categories tested their abilities in commercial blow drying, their imagination with “avant garde” styling and their skills in bridal put-ups.

The judges were experienced hairdresser Linda Cross, salon owner Shaun Smethurst, talented former student Dan Bushy and Alison Gray, the College’s assistant director for the faculty of services to people.

The top three in each category and the campus at which they study were:

Beautiful bride
1st – Emine Doherty, Beverley
2nd – Natasha Revell, Beverley
3rd – Emma Leah, Bridlington

Blow drying
1st  – , Beverley
2nd – Sarah Simms, Beverley
3rd – Emily Baker, Beverley

Avant garde
1st – Rachel Murray, Bridlington
2nd – Michelle Jones, Beverley
3rd – Charlotte Fowie, Bridlington

Natalee Eddom, head of curriculum for Hair and Beauty, said: “The standard of hairdressing on show was really high and it was great to see our students showing their abilities to our audience.

“Our students showed real imagination and some incredible attention to detail, and the judges were really impressed by their work.”

The competition was followed by a catwalk show by level three learners in which they showcased work they have done throughout the year.

The two themes were “Blonde Ambition”, which featured only people with bleached blonde hair in the style of Lady Gaga, and “Let’s Dance”, which featured a variety of dance-themed styles, including a Starsky and Hutch section.

East Riding College runs a variety of full and part-time hairdressing courses at its Beverley and Bridlington campuses, ranging from level one to level three.
