A tough battle ensued as both teams fought out a determined and robust game with Mill Lane United having more resolve to clinch all three points.

St Andrews hardly had time to settle before Connor Binney put Mill Lane United on the score sheet after five minutes. Mill Lane United worked hard to hold off any St Andrews’s attacks with Walker, Marshall, McMullen and McDonnell combining well.

Again strong midfield play and great ball movement allowed Binney to double his tally. St Andrews did react and a great solo run by their striker defeated Lane’s out stretched keeper in the bottom corner to pull one back.

This gave the impetus to Lane to extend their lead further through Niall Ringrose before the break. St Andrews role in the first half was reduced to part involvement as Lane’s defence coped admirably with anything thrown at them.

The second half started well again for Mill Lane United as Binney completed his hat-trick and Ringrose capped a magnificent return game from injury with a fine headed goal from a well taken corner kick by Ronan McCaffrey. Lane’s Louis Heath struck the cross bar from a stunning free kick, while other well worked movements lacked the finishing touch as both teams coped on a very slippery muddy pitch.

St Andrews did produce some creative football resulting in a wonderful free kick that was hit perfectly to the top of the net but they had left it too late. Lane’s Sam Brownlee was noted for his non-stop running and hard work on the left midfield.
