Short readings from Samuel Pepys’ diary set the scene.  Concert Royal’s vocal and instrumental combination ideally expresses the variety of this unique music. Margarette Ashton’s light soprano voice perfectly suits Purcell’s florid melody and expressive recitative. Fresh interpretations performed on historic instruments recreate the sound world of the late seventeenth century.
