Choice Road Show

Next week a team from is taking to the road for a five day tour of the region to tell people all about patient choice and the NHS constitution.

Since 1 April 2008, patients who are referred to see a specialist, have the right to choose to receive treatment at any hospital in England where their care is funded by the NHS. This includes NHS hospitals and many private hospitals.

The road show aims to inform people about their right to choose their preferred hospital, with the only exceptions being cases requiring speed of access, such as suspected cancer and chest pains, in addition to maternity and mental health services.

The road show will be visiting Bridlington, Driffield, Goole, Anlaby and Beverley throughout the week from 8am until 5pm. As well as patient choice, members of the public will have the chance to learn more about health initiatives such as Change4Life and Give Soap a Chance plus get advice on weight management, healthy eating, mental well being and stopping smoking. Staff will be on hand to provide information and advice and there will also be the opportunity to have a personal health check.

Andrea Smith, Assistant Director Market Development at NHS East Riding of Yorkshire said: “All patients have a right to choose when and where they are treated – that’s why we are increasing choice and making sure that patients are aware they can choose. The patient choice road show is a great opportunity for us to go in to the community to meet people and share these important messages.

Patients have told us they want to choose hospitals based on what is important to them. Choice is something that can allow them to do this and make their experience of the NHS much easier and more relaxed at what can be a stressful time.”

The road show is part of a region wide campaign to raise awareness of patient choice and will be travelling across the Yorkshire and Humber area throughout the summer.
